Chapter 20 - Adrian’s estate

Adrian was dead.
His estate was not enormous.
Comfortable.
Professional liability coverage addressed part of the claims depending on policy and timing.
More important to me was his archived letter.
Found in a locked office file.
Addressed to Evelyn.
Never sent.
Maybe drafted after his stroke warning signs began.
It said:
Evie,
What we did for Grant was not medicine. I told myself I was correcting an unfairness. I used Lucas’s specimen because you convinced me the family relationship made the difference harmless.
There.
It was not harmless.
There.
Rachel consented to a donor. Lucas consented to storage. Neither consented to what I did.
There.
I should have refused you.
No excuse.
Grant read the letter.
Then left the room.
Evelyn refused to read it for two months.
When she finally did, she said:
“He is blaming me.”
I answered:
“He is blaming himself too.”
She stared.
