Chapter 17 - Grant’s first visit with Maddie

Maddie refused to see him for three weeks.

We did not force.

Then she asked:

“Does Daddy live somewhere else?”

“Yes.”

“Because me?”

“No.”

“Because he hit you?”

“Partly.”

“Can I see him?”

“Yes.”

Her therapist recommended a short supervised visit.

Not because Grant had physically harmed Maddie.

Because he had publicly rejected her and she was afraid of another emotional rupture.

Grant entered the child-services room carrying no gifts.

Good.

Maddie stood beside me.

He crouched.

“Hi, Maddie.”

She did not move.

Then:

“Are you my daddy?”

His face crumpled.

He looked toward the therapist.

She said nothing.

His answer had to be his.

“Yes.”

Maddie frowned.

“But you said no.”

“I said something terrible because I was angry and scared.”

“At me?”

“No.”

“Then why tell me?”

Grant started crying.

“Because I made you carry a problem that belonged to adults.”

There.

The therapist later told me that sentence mattered.

Maddie asked:

“Are you blood?”

Grant said:

“No.”

Then:

“But I chose to be your dad before you were born, and I have loved being your dad every day since.”

She stared.

“Even party?”

He could not lie.

“I loved you then, but I behaved like I didn’t.”

Maddie started crying.

He did not touch her until she moved toward him.

Then she hugged him.

I looked away.

Not because I forgave Grant.

May you like

Because my daughter deserved her moment without my face inside it.
