Chapter 26 - Daddy

Three years after the reception, Maddie was eight.

Grant was forty-one.

I was thirty-seven.

We attended her school music performance separately but sat in the same row.

Why?

Maddie asked.

Evelyn was not there.

Lucas was not there.

Not every identity needed a seat.

Maddie walked onto the stage.

Spotted us.

Waved.

Then whispered something to the child beside her and got shushed by the teacher.

Normal.

After the performance she ran toward us.

“Daddy!”

Grant turned.

For half a second, I saw the memory hit him.

Pink dress.

Reception.

Five years old.

Daddy.

That child isn’t even mine.

This time Grant crouched.

Opened his arms.

Maddie ran into them.

He held her.

No one watching knew the significance.

Good.

He said:

“You were great.”

“I missed one line.”

“Nobody noticed.”

“Mom noticed.”

I said:

“I absolutely did.”

Maddie rolled her eyes.

Then took one of my hands.

One of Grant’s.

We walked toward the parking lot.

Divorced parents.

One child.

Complicated biology.

No crisis.

Sometimes the repaired version of a family is less symmetrical.

May you like

Still strong.
