Chapter 25 - My marriage does not survive

Grant changed.

I believed that.

He became a better father.

Also true.

I still filed for divorce.

Not immediately.

Fourteen months after the reception.

People asked why I waited.

Because I needed to know whether I was leaving Grant or simply escaping the crisis.

I watched.

Therapy.

Parenting.

Accountability.

No new violence.

He completed diversion successfully.

His assault charge resolved under the program.

He apologized without demanding forgiveness.

Still, my marriage had cracked in more than one place.

The slap.

The public rejection of Maddie.

Three years of hiding what he suspected about her conception.

The decision to protect his mother’s secret rather than tell me what happened to my own reproductive treatment.

I could co-parent with the man Grant was becoming.

I could not be married to the man who had kept that secret beside me every night.

He cried when I told him.

“Everything I’ve done to change—”

“Matters.”

“Then why?”

“Because change isn’t a receipt you hand me for marriage.”

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

That was one of his best moments.

No grabbing.

No:

sit down.

No:

don’t embarrass me.

May you like

He let me leave.
