Chapter 5 - Evelyn’s half-brother

The photograph alone did not prove kinship.

Public records did.

Adrian Vale was born Adrian Joseph Vale in 1955.

His mother:

Judith Vale.

Eight years later Judith remarried a man named Charles Mercer.

They had a daughter.

Evelyn Mercer.

Evelyn Bennett’s maiden name.

Adrian was her maternal half-brother.

Why had I never heard that?

Because the Mercers barely acknowledged Adrian.

Judith’s first marriage ended badly.

Adrian spent much of adolescence with his father.

He attended medical school under the Vale surname.

Evelyn grew up Mercer.

Different social circles.

Different names.

Still siblings.

There were photographs.

School records.

An old obituary for Judith listed:

“daughter Evelyn Bennett and son Dr. Adrian Vale.”

It had not been secret to the world.

Just omitted from ours.

I showed Grant.

We met in my attorney’s office four days after the reception.

My lawyer was Amanda Ross.

Family law.

Grant brought his own attorney.

He stared at the records.

“Mom never told me.”

“You knew she knew him.”

“I knew she said he was trustworthy.”

“Did you know they were related?”

“No.”

I believed him.

Then asked:

“Why did you say Maddie wasn’t yours?”

Grant’s face tightened.

“My mother told me the clinic notice meant the donor might not be the donor we selected.”

“That still doesn’t make Maddie not your daughter.”

“I panicked.”

“You pointed at a five-year-old.”

“I know.”

“No. Do not say that.”

He looked up.

“You keep saying you know. If you knew, you wouldn’t have done it.”

Silence.

Then I asked:

“Did Evelyn know about your infertility?”

He looked down.

There.

“When?”

“Before Maddie was conceived.”

I stopped breathing.

“You told her?”

“Yes.”

May you like

Everything changed again.
