Chapter 6 - The conversation Grant hid

Grant told Evelyn after the failed sperm retrieval.

I had been in the pharmacy getting pain medication.

He called his mother from the hospital parking garage.

He said:

“It’s over.”

She asked:

“What?”

“I can’t have children.”

That was how Grant framed it.

Not:

We need another route.

Over.

Evelyn drove to our apartment that evening.

I had no idea why she was suddenly so kind.

She brought soup.

Sat beside Grant.

Held his hand.

Then asked me privately:

“What options did the doctor give you?”

“Donor conception.”

Her face went blank.

“Anonymous?”

“Yes.”

“And Grant is considering that?”

“We both are.”

She said:

“Take your time.”

I thought that was compassion.

Later, Grant admitted she told him privately:

“You cannot bring a stranger’s blood into this family without thinking.”

He answered:

“It would be my child.”

Evelyn said:

“Legally.”

There.

She did not forbid.

She did worse.

She made biology the unspoken debt Grant would carry.

A week later she called Adrian.

Grant knew.

“What did she ask him?”

“She said she wanted him to make sure we were protected.”

“Protected from what?”

“I don’t know.”

I stared.

“You never asked?”

“I didn’t want to talk about it.”

That sentence appeared everywhere in our marriage.

Grant’s shame did not make him cruel initially.

It made him avoidant.

May you like

Avoidance gave Evelyn room.
