Chapter 23 - Lucas becomes Lucas

We did not turn Lucas into:

Dad Lucas.

He did not want that.

Neither did Maddie initially.

He remained Lucas.

Sometimes Uncle Lucas because that was the family category she already knew.

Biology complicated it.

Language did not need to solve everything.

Lucas’s wife Sarah struggled.

Understandably.

One child in their home.

Another biological child created without his consent.

She attended counseling too.

At first she did not want Maddie at their house.

I respected that.

Then, after a year, she invited us for a barbecue.

No cameras.

No ceremony.

Maddie played with Lucas’s son Ethan.

Technically half-siblings.

They fought over a basketball hoop within twenty minutes.

Promising.

Later Maddie asked:

“Does Ethan know?”

“Yes.”

“What he say?”

“He said you cheat at HORSE.”

She looked offended.

Identity resolved for the afternoon.

No adult should underestimate the stabilizing power of ordinary sibling annoyance.
