Chapter 14 - Evelyn’s reason

Evelyn agreed to a recorded civil deposition.

Her attorney told her to answer narrowly.

She still revealed enough.

“Did you ask Dr. Vale to use Lucas Bennett’s stored sperm?”

“I asked my brother whether there was a way to preserve family genetic continuity.”

“Did Rachel Bennett know?”

“No.”

“Did Grant?”

“Not initially.”

“Did Lucas?”

“No.”

“Did you understand Lucas had stored the sample for his own future use?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe Dr. Vale could lawfully use it without Lucas’s consent?”

“I assumed Adrian would handle medical requirements.”

Convenient.

“Did you ask him whether Lucas had consented?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

She looked straight ahead.

“I did not want to know.”

There.

Then:

“Why did Bennett blood matter more than Rachel’s informed choice?”

Evelyn’s attorney objected.

She answered anyway.

“Because Grant was devastated.”

“Did Grant ask you to do it?”

“No.”

“Rachel?”

“No.”

“So you were protecting Grant from something he had already agreed to?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

Then:

“I thought one day he would thank me.”

He did not.

May you like

Neither did I.
