Chapter 11 - Charles Learns What His Wife Did

Charles did not know Daniel was alive.
Police confirmed that through communications, location data, and eventually his own cooperation.
He had believed Margaret when she told him Daniel’s remains were identified.
He had been devastated.
But he had also been strangely passive.
I confronted him at the police station.
“You never asked to see proof?”
His face collapsed.
“I asked your mother.”
“My mother is dead. Margaret is your wife.”
He nodded.
“I asked Margaret.”
“And?”
“She said Daniel was too badly injured.”
“So you stopped asking?”
“Yes.”
He looked ashamed.
Then:
“I have done that for forty years.”
That sentence mattered.
Charles had not helped kidnap Daniel.
He had done something less dramatic and more familiar.
He let Margaret handle difficult family truths because confronting her was exhausting.
Ryan failed.
Margaret defended.
Charles withdrew.
Daniel cleaned up the consequences.
