Chapter 23 - Martin Comes to Dinner

Martin recovered slowly.
The coffin left him with nightmares.
Dark enclosed spaces.
Church music.
The smell of polished wood.
He underwent therapy.
So did we.
Months later, he came to our house for dinner.
Emma stared at him.
“You were coffin man.”
I nearly dropped a glass.
Martin considered.
“Yes.”
“Was scary?”
“Very.”
“Me too.”
He nodded.
“I’m sorry you saw me like that.”
Emma said:
“Daddy not dead.”
“No.”
“Good.”
Then she asked for ketchup.
That was Emma’s style of closure.
Martin later told Daniel:
“She saved me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Sarah opened the coffin.”
Martin smiled.
May you like
“Emma made the phone ring.”
Both were true.
