Chapter 3 - Martin Hale

His full name was Martin Hale.

Seventy-two years old.

Retired compliance director for Vance Structural Systems.

The company belonged to Daniel’s family.

Charles founded it forty years earlier as a small manufacturer of specialized structural components. By the time I married Daniel, it supplied commercial builders, transportation contractors, and several large industrial customers across the country.

Charles remained chairman.

Daniel was chief legal and compliance officer.

Ryan ran operations.

Margaret held no executive title.

That had never stopped anyone from treating her like she did.

Martin worked for Charles for thirty-one years.

He retired two years earlier.

I had met him twice.

At holiday parties.

Quiet man.

Silver hair.

Always remembered Emma’s name.

Why was he inside my husband’s coffin?

Police would need days to reconstruct the answer.

The first useful piece came when Martin regained consciousness at the hospital.

He asked:

“Did Sarah get Daniel’s message?”

Detective Lena Ortiz was leading the investigation by then.

She asked:

“You knew Daniel was alive?”

Martin closed his eyes.

“He was three days ago.”

That was not reassuring.

“Where?”

“I don’t know now.”

“What happened?”

Martin struggled to speak.

Then said the name we were already expecting.

“Ryan.”
