Chapter 6 - What Daniel Had Been Investigating

Daniel had been auditing safety certifications.

Not glamorous.

Not the kind of thing families kill each other over in movies.

But this was not a movie.

Vance Structural produced load-bearing assemblies used in commercial renovation projects.

Every batch required materials testing.

Measurements.

Inspection records.

Certificates.

Daniel discovered that several test results had been changed after the fact.

Not completely invented.

Adjusted.

A component that failed one tolerance was reclassified under another production run.

A supplier certificate with a missing verification was copied forward.

Inspection dates appeared on days when the inspectors were not working.

The pattern led toward operations.

Ryan’s division.

Daniel initially assumed sloppy paperwork.

Then Martin contacted him.

Martin had kept copies of internal reports from before retirement because he was helping the company respond to a separate insurance inquiry.

His copies did not match the current records.

Somebody had altered documents after Martin left.

Daniel confronted Ryan privately.

Ryan denied wrongdoing.

Daniel told him outside auditors were coming.

Then Daniel disappeared.
