Chapter 9 - Martin’s Story

Martin remembered more after two days.

Daniel called him one week before disappearing.

“I think Ryan changed the records.”

Martin answered:

“He did.”

Daniel met him at a diner.

Martin brought a flash drive containing archived inspection documents.

Daniel compared them with current company files.

Changes were obvious.

Daniel wanted to report everything to the board and outside counsel.

Martin warned him:

“Your mother will stop you.”

That surprised Daniel.

Why Margaret?

Because Martin had already confronted her months earlier.

Margaret told him:

“Ryan inherited his father’s ability to take risks.”

Martin answered:

“Falsifying a certification isn’t risk.”

She told him he was retired and no longer understood the pressures of modern business.

He threatened to contact regulators.

Two days later someone broke into his house.

Nothing valuable disappeared.

Only a locked file case.

Martin did not report the suspected connection.

He regretted that.

Then Daniel vanished.

Martin called Ryan.

Mistake.

“I know what you’ve done.”

Ryan asked to meet.

Martin went.

He woke later inside a dark storage room.
