Chapter 11 - Gwendolyn removes the dress

My sister did not marry him that day.

She went upstairs.

Removed the veil.

Removed the gown.

Put on sweatpants.

Then came downstairs barefoot.

It was the first time all day she looked like herself.

Thayer waited in the library.

He said:

“I was going to put it back.”

Gwendolyn answered:

“That’s your defense?”

“I wasn’t selling it.”

“You were pledging it.”

“Temporarily.”

“It isn’t yours.”

“I was trying to save my company.”

“Then save your company with your property.”

He said:

“We were about to be married.”

There.

Same poison in a softer form.

What is yours would become ours.

Except no.

Marriage would not have granted him automatic ownership of Estelle’s ring.

The ring was not even Gwendolyn’s.

It belonged to our mother.

Gwendolyn said:

“You almost let them blame a child.”

Thayer’s face changed.

That was the one part he had no financial language for.
