Chapter 18 - Percival becomes afraid of pockets

For weeks, Percival stopped putting anything in his pockets.

Coins.

Toy cars.

Candy.

Nothing.

Why?

“People think I stole.”

That hurt.

His child therapist explained:

The search mattered almost as much as the slap.

An adult turned his body into evidence.

Pockets emptied.

Accusation first.

Proof later.

So we practiced something simple.

At home, I put a toy airplane in my own pocket.

Asked:

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

Then put it in his.

“Now?”

“Mine?”

“If I gave it to you, yes.”

Then:

“If something goes missing, does being near it mean you took it?”

“No.”

“Do adults get to hit you to find out?”

“No.”

Slow.

May you like

Not dramatic.

By spring he carried toy planes again.
