Chapter 4 - Gwendolyn postpones the ceremony

The officiant asked:
“What do you want to do?”
Gwendolyn looked at the altar.
Then at Thayer.
Then at Percival’s face.
She said:
“Delay.”
Not cancel.
Not yet.
The guests were moved inside for drinks.
No announcement beyond:
“Ceremony temporarily postponed.”
Thayer’s parents were furious.
My mother was humiliated.
I did not care.
Gwendolyn came to me.
“Cormac, did you have to hit Mom?”
“No.”
That surprised her.
“I shouldn’t have.”
“She hit Percival.”
“I know.”
“Then—”
“I protected him when I pulled him away. The slap was anger.”
She looked down.
“Thank you for saying that.”
Then:
“Do you think Thayer stole it?”
“I think he took it without permission.”
“Same thing?”
“Not always legally. Sometimes yes. We need more.”
She closed her eyes.
“This is my wedding.”
“I know.”
