Chapter 16 - Megan’s medical social worker

The hospice social worker, Janice Ford, provided records and later spoke with Claire at Claire’s request.

Janice remembered Megan clearly.

“She was worried about Ryan idealizing Daniel’s home.”

Claire asked:

“What does that mean?”

“Megan said Ryan imagined moving in with his father would make grief stop.”

It would not.

Then Janice read from her note:

Mother states Ryan compares father’s household with his own and views half-sister as having unrestricted access to father. Therapist addressing jealousy.

I had seen the note.

I had minimized it.

Another:

Father advised to avoid promises about bedroom, school, possessions until spouse included in transition planning.

That one destroyed my claim that I did not foresee the conflict.

I had been warned.

I made the bedroom promise anyway.

Claire looked at me.

“You knew Lily was already a target in his imagination.”

“I knew he was jealous.”

“And you never told me.”

May you like

“No.”

The secret had harmed both children before they met.
