Chapter 24 - Claire decides whether Ryan can ever stay

The major unresolved issue remained:
Could Ryan ever sleep under the same roof as Lily?
Not whether he deserved family.
Whether Lily was safe.
His therapists reported:
No further violence.
Improved impulse control.
Grief symptoms reduced.
School stable.
He took responsibility without minimizing.
Lily’s therapist reported:
Residual anxiety around sudden movements.
No nightmares for six weeks.
She could be in the same room with Ryan for increasing periods.
Then Claire said:
“One overnight. Neutral place.”
We rented a family cabin? Avoid recurring cabin perhaps. Better a beach rental for weekend? Could be a small suburban rental near home. Let's do a neutral rented house for family-therapy weekend.
Separate bedrooms.
Claire present.
Me present.
Clear rules.
No forced sibling activities.
First evening:
Fine.
Then Lily accidentally knocked over Ryan’s model kit.
He shouted:
“Lily!”
She froze.
Everyone froze.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Then said:
“I’m mad. I’m going outside with Dad.”
He walked away.
That was the moment Claire changed.
Not because he never got angry.
May you like
Because he did.
And chose not to hurt.
