Chapter 26 - Claire comes home

Eleven months after the brick incident, Claire ended the legal separation.

Not because the secret became small.

It never would.

She did not simply return to the old marriage.

We signed an updated marital agreement about financial transparency and separate-property reporting? Maybe not necessary emotionally. We had already disclosed. More important:

No concealed dependents.

No private parenting arrangements.

Shared access to calendars involving either child where relevant to household.

Couples therapy continued.

Claire moved back into the mansion gradually.

Lily first.

Then Claire.

Ryan did not move in permanently.

That surprised him.

Instead his primary home remained the townhouse with me for school stability and because rebuilding sibling safety slowly was healthier than making the mansion a trophy.

Could I maintain two homes?

Yes.

I did.

Ryan stayed at mansion:

Some weekends.

One weekday dinner.

Later occasional overnights.

Adam remained involved.

Lily retained her playroom.

Ryan chose a guest bedroom with green walls when he stayed.

I offered to redesign it.

He said:

“No. It’s fine.”

That was growth.

Then one final juvenile review.

Ryan completed probation requirements.

No new incidents.

Therapy continued voluntarily after formal supervision ended.

Juvenile case closed under the jurisdiction’s rules.

No celebration.

Just one less court date.

That night Claire asked me:

“Do you still think avoiding conflict protects people?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“I’m still angry.”

“I know.”

“I may always be angry about parts of this.”

“I know.”

“I’m also home.”

I reached for her hand.

She let me hold it.

That was enough.
