Chapter 3 - Megan Cole

I met Megan twelve years before Claire.

We dated for nine months.

It ended without hatred.

We wanted different lives.

Two weeks after we separated, Megan learned she was pregnant.

I asked whether we should try again.

She said no.

“You want to fix a pregnancy by rebuilding a relationship that already failed.”

She was right.

We established paternity after Ryan was born.

My name went on his birth certificate.

A family-court order gave Megan primary physical custody.

I had scheduled parenting time.

Support.

Medical responsibility.

Education involvement.

Nothing illegal.

Nothing secret from the government.

Only from nearly everyone else.

Why?

I was private.

Then embarrassed.

Then cowardly.

My family knew Megan existed but not all of them knew Ryan was mine.

My attorney knew.

My accountant knew.

A handful of school employees.

Megan’s brother Adam.

That was enough to make the secret administratively possible.

When Claire and I met, Ryan was almost two.

I should have told her before our third date.

Before I proposed.

Before we married.

Before Lily was conceived.

Instead I kept thinking:

Next week.

After this trip.

After Ryan adjusts to preschool.

After Claire meets my mother.

Then Claire became pregnant.

By then the truth felt less like a difficult conversation and more like a bomb I had deliberately buried beneath our marriage.

So I kept burying.

I saw Ryan:

Usually two weekends each month.

Some weekdays.

Birthdays.

School events.

Summer trips when I told Claire I was handling business.

I paid:

$4,800 monthly support initially, later adjusted.

School tuition.

Health insurance.

Half of major extracurricular and medical expenses.

Not hush money.

Parenting obligations.

Megan never blackmailed me.

She hated the secrecy.

Twice she said:

“Your wife deserves to know.”

I said:

“I’ll tell her.”

I did not.

Then Megan became ill.

That was when the secret stopped being merely dishonest.

It became dangerous.
