Chapter 11 - Why I disappeared too

Ryan cut me out of Lily’s life gradually.
Not through a restraining order.
Through custody.
He was Lily’s father.
Emily was incapacitated.
I was an uncle.
I had no automatic right to visitation.
Ryan told me:
“Stop confusing her.”
“What am I confusing?”
“You keep telling her Emily may improve.”
“She may.”
“She needs to move forward.”
“Move forward from a living mother?”
He hung up.
I tried seeing Lily through school events.
Ryan complained to the school that I was creating family conflict.
The school requested I arrange contact through him.
Legally sensible.
Emotionally devastating.
I considered filing for visitation.
My lawyer warned:
“As an uncle, your standing is limited. The stronger path is resolving Emily’s capacity and access rights.”
So I focused on Emily.
That choice left Lily alone with Ryan’s story longer than I can forgive easily.
May you like
Even though I understand why I made it.
