Chapter 3 - The police report

I called police.
Not because Ryan was a gangster.
He wasn’t.
Not because I wanted him arrested at the altar.
Because he had struck a child in front of me.
The club’s security manager had already separated people.
Ryan did not resist.
Vanessa disappeared into a private room with her sister.
Emily sat in a chair holding Lily.
I stayed nearby.
An officer asked me:
“Did you kick Mr. Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“Before or after he struck the child?”
“Immediately after.”
“Was he moving toward her?”
“He had just hit her and still had his body turned toward her.”
“Did you continue hitting him?”
“No.”
“Any weapon?”
“No.”
The ballroom had security cameras.
Good.
No need for family mythology.
No need for my version to become sacred.
The footage later showed exactly what happened.
Ryan slapped Lily.
I entered within seconds.
I kicked him backward once.
Then immediately went to Lily.
Prosecutors later declined to charge me because the force was considered reasonably connected to interrupting a continuing threat to a child.
My own lawyer still told me:
“Do not become proud of that.”
I wasn’t.
I had come to expose a lie.
I had not planned to kick anyone.
Emily said later:
“You did what you thought you had to.”
I answered:
“I also brought you to a wedding.”
That was my mistake.
Different.
May you like
We would get there.
