Chapter 8 - The guardianship

Ryan had obtained a temporary court guardianship over Emily’s personal and financial decisions during the most severe period of incapacity.

That was not inherently sinister.

Someone needed authority.

Medical bills.

Insurance appeals.

Mortgage.

Rehabilitation contracts.

Tax filings.

The court required periodic reports.

The first report was accurate.

Emily remained unable to manage affairs.

The second was more complicated.

By then, therapy notes documented:

Consistent communication.

Understanding of basic choices.

Repeated requests to see Lily.

Ability to identify family members.

Ryan’s filing described:

“minimal meaningful communication with fluctuating awareness.”

Not entirely false.

Not fairly complete.

He also reported:

“no significant change supporting independent family contact.”

That was harder to defend.

The facility case manager had recommended structured visits with Lily.

Ryan had declined.

Why?

He later said:

“Lily was finally stable.”

Stable became his favorite word.
