Chapter 19 - Lily’s first week after the wedding

Lily did not simply become happy because Mommy was alive.

She became furious.

At everyone.

“Mommy lied.”

Emily cried.

“No.”

“You didn’t come.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You didn’t call.”

“I tried.”

Lily threw a stuffed animal across the therapist’s room.

Then turned toward me.

“You knew.”

“Not at first.”

“But you knew before wedding.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I wanted to.”

“Then why?”

Because adults were arranging the reveal.

Because lawyers.

Because Ryan controlled access.

Because I had chosen a public moment.

None of those mattered to a seven-year-old.

“I should have found a safer way to tell you.”

There.

She screamed:

“I hate all of you!”

Fair.

Therapist Dr. Nina Alvarez told us:

“Do not demand gratitude because her mother survived.”

That became the rule.

Lily had lost fourteen months to a false grief.

Learning the person was alive created a second shock.

Recovery did not begin with hugging.

It began with permission to be angry.
