Chapter 26 - The empty chair disappears

Three years after the wedding, Lily was ten.
She remembered the empty chair more than the flowers.
At a school concert, an unused chair sat beside the stage.
She stared at it.
Emily noticed.
“You okay?”
Lily nodded.
Then:
“I thought empty chairs meant someone gone.”
Emily sat beside her.
“Sometimes they mean somebody brought too many chairs.”
Lily laughed.
Small moment.
Important.
Ryan attended the concert too.
Different row.
No drama.
He arrived early.
Sat where the parenting coordinator had agreed.
Afterward Lily walked to him.
He hugged her only after she lifted her arms.
Consent had become painfully specific in that family.
Good.
Then she walked back to Emily.
No child forced to choose.
Ryan and Emily could speak politely about school schedules.
That was the maximum relationship.
May you like
Enough.
