Chapter 12 - The advocate

The person who changed everything was not me.
Her name was Caroline Ames.
Independent patient advocate.
The rehabilitation facility assigned her after Emily repeatedly asked:
“Why Lily no come?”
Caroline reviewed the chart.
Noted the gap between therapy progress and family contact.
She contacted Ryan.
He said:
“Family visits destabilize her.”
Caroline asked for supporting clinical documentation.
There was little.
She requested an independent capacity evaluation.
Ryan objected.
That triggered court review.
The judge appointed a neutral guardian ad litem.
For the first time, someone outside Ryan’s chosen circle read:
Medical notes.
Therapy reports.
Guardianship filings.
Visit restrictions.
Emails.
The question changed from:
Is Emily fully recovered?
to:
Does Emily have enough capacity to make specific decisions about contact with her daughter?
Those are not the same thing.

The answer was yes.
