Chapter 15 - The divorce decree

The divorce itself was legally real.
But ugly.
Ryan filed when Emily still lacked full capacity.
The court appointed an attorney for her.
Property division remained mostly conservative.
The marital home went to Ryan subject to an equalization payment.
Emily retained retirement assets and a disability settlement account.
No stolen fortune.
No forged deed.
The problem was custody-related representations outside the divorce.
Ryan repeatedly described Lily’s relationship with Emily as:
“clinically suspended indefinitely.”
He cited medical uncertainty.
The court did not terminate Emily’s parental rights.
That mattered enormously.
Ryan had physical custody because Emily could not parent independently.
But Emily remained Lily’s mother.
Nothing authorized Ryan to tell Lily she was dead.
Nothing authorized him to erase contact forever once capacity improved.
The legal system had not done what Lily thought.
May you like
Ryan had.
