Chapter 2 - Emily says her daughter’s name

Nobody moved for several seconds.
Then Emily did.
One step.
Her left leg remained weaker than her right.
The movement was careful.
Deliberate.
“Lily.”
My niece made a sound I had never heard from a child.
Half sob.
Half gasp.
She looked at me.
Then at Emily.
Then at Ryan.
“Mommy?”
Emily’s mouth trembled.
“Yes.”
Lily ran.
Not gracefully.
She nearly tripped on her dress.
Emily opened her arms.
The impact almost knocked her backward.
I reached instinctively.
Emily shook her head.
She wanted the moment.
Lily clung to her.
“You died.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“No.”
“You died.”
“No, baby.”
Ryan said:
“Emily.”
Every head turned toward him.
Emily looked up.
“You told her?”
He said nothing.
Lily started crying harder.
“Daddy said.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Ryan?”
He looked toward her.
That was the moment I realized something else.
Vanessa had not known.
Whatever else she had been told, the living woman standing at the ballroom door was a shock to her too.
Ryan moved toward Lily.
I stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
“She’s my daughter.”
“You just hit her.”
“James.”
“Stay there.”
He looked at the room.
Then at the security staff.
Then at me.
His face changed.
Calculation.
For fourteen months Ryan had controlled information.
Now there were more than a hundred witnesses.
May you like
That control was over.
