Chapter 8 - The Rental House

The address in the folder belonged to a furnished house four hundred miles away.

Small town.

Three bedrooms.

Monthly rental.

Paid for by Daniel.

Start date:

Wednesday.

The next morning.

He had already arranged utilities.

Internet.

A temporary grocery delivery.

Even a storage unit.

The lease identified me as an authorized occupant.

I had never seen it.

My signature did not appear because Daniel rented it in his own name.

That detail mattered.

He could legally rent a house.

He could not legally force me to live there.

What did he expect?

That remained the central question.

Daniel’s explanation through counsel:

Rachel wanted space.

I found a place.

I packed because she was overwhelmed.

Melissa assisted with school logistics.

Then Rachel panicked and misinterpreted everything.

If not for the 911 recording, that story might have sounded more plausible.

Because the operator heard Daniel say:

“You’re making this harder than it has to be.”

After I had locked myself and our son behind a bathroom door.

Then heard him break the frame.

Context is a powerful thing.
