Chapter 12 - Why Not Call Me?
This question tortured me.
Why did neither of them call?
Mom tried.
Twice.
First time, Chloe stood nearby.
Mom said:
“Carter, I don’t feel safe.”
I answered:
“Mom, what happened?”
Chloe took the phone.
“She’s upset because I stopped her from going outside alone.”
I sided with Chloe.
Second time, Mom called during a business dinner.
“She locks my door.”
I laughed lightly.
I actually laughed.
“You probably hit the lock setting by mistake.”
No wonder she stopped calling.
Maya had my number.
Why not her?
Because Chloe told staff all concerns went through her unless there was a medical emergency.
Maya feared losing her job.
Then Chloe caught her speaking privately with Eleanor and threatened:
“If you create drama in this family, you’re gone.”
Maya began preserving evidence instead.
