Chapter 15 - Why Chloe Wanted Mom Gone

For weeks, I assumed the motive was simple hatred.
They never liked each other.
Mom considered Chloe image-conscious.
Chloe considered Mom intrusive.
But hate was not enough.
The fuller explanation came from household records and messages.
After my father died, Mom moved in temporarily.
Then permanently.
She did something Chloe hated.
She noticed things.
Staff turnover.
Bills.
Access.
Schedules.
Not fraud.
Not missing millions.
Control.
Chloe had gradually turned our home into a hierarchy with herself at the top.
Maya asked Chloe.
Driver asked Chloe.
Cook asked Chloe.
Vendors asked Chloe.
My assistant sent travel schedules to Chloe.
Even I increasingly asked:
“Can you handle it?”
Mom challenged that structure.
“Why does Chloe need to know what time your plane lands before you do?”
“Why did she change my doctor?”
“Why is Maya asking permission to take Sunday off?”
“Why does your wife open your mail?”
Small questions.
Relentless.
Chloe did not want money from my mother.
She wanted the one witness inside the house who remembered how the household operated before Chloe controlled it.
