Chapter 17 - Maya

Maya became the person everyone praised.
She hated it.
“I waited too long.”
She repeated that for months.
I paid all her medical expenses.
She had no major injury.
Scar above the eyebrow.
Small.
She chose not to cover it.
But emotionally, she struggled.
She had spent weeks working inside a house where she believed an elderly woman was being abused.
She also needed income.
Her parents depended partly on her.
“People online say you just call police.”
She told me this later.
“Why didn’t you?”
She looked at me.
“Because people online don’t pay my rent.”
Fair.
Eventually she did act.
She preserved evidence.
Protected Mom physically.
Then spoke immediately when I came home.
