Chapter 26 - Eleanor Chooses Her Own Home

When Mom turned eighty-one, she told me she wanted her own place.

I almost objected.

Then caught myself.

“Why?”

“Because I am eighty-one and I want to watch television at midnight without you asking whether I’m okay.”

Fair.

We found a condominium twelve minutes away.

Accessible shower.

Elevator.

Good security.

No stairs required.

She chose it.

Not because anyone moved her out.

That distinction mattered enormously.

On moving day, she stood in the foyer.

Looked around.

“This house got too big.”

“It always was.”

“Your father liked showing off.”

“I inherited subtlety.”

She stared at my suit.

“No.”

Then she left.

Voluntarily.

With keys in her own hand.
