Chapter 15 - Tyler’s disciplinary file

Formal investigation found:

Three prior Diversion incidents.

One:

Changed Emma’s AAC voice.

Two:

Locked another student’s backpack in equipment cage.

Three:

Used a slur toward a freshman during sports travel.

No formal suspensions.

No permanent discipline notation.

Then the fountain.

Ashbourne’s disciplinary board recommended:

Expulsion.

Tyler’s family appealed.

Grounds:

Disproportionate punishment.

Failure to consider prior incidents as formally unadjudicated.

Bias due my public position.

The appeal panel included external members.

Good.

They upheld expulsion based solely on the fountain incident plus evidence properly considered under school rules.

Not because of my title.

Not because his father annoyed me.

Because he deliberately destroyed a disability-related communication aid and blocked Emma while peers mocked her.

Madison received:

One-semester suspension.

Mandatory re-entry conditions.

Loss of student leadership roles.

Why not expulsion?

She recorded, encouraged, mocked, and participated in prior harassment, but did not physically destroy the device.

Reasonable people disagreed.

Emma did too.

She wanted both gone.

The school made its decision.
