Chapter 8 - The teacher who recognized me

Daniel Reed asked to speak privately.
He looked ashamed.
“I knew about one incident.”
“One?”
“The cafeteria.”
“Which one?”
He told me.
Two months earlier, Tyler had taken Emma’s tablet and changed the synthesized voice setting to a cartoon character.
Students laughed when Emma tried to answer.
Reed saw.
He made Tyler restore it.
Then wrote:
Peer misuse of device. Resolved in class.
“Why didn’t you report disability harassment?”
“I did report it.”
He showed me the email.
To Assistant Dean Paula Kensington.
Subject:
Concern re repeated targeting of Emma Bennett’s AAC device
Paula replied:
Thank you. We are handling under Conduct Diversion. Please avoid escalation language until student-support review.
Conduct Diversion.
I had never heard the term.
Reed said:
“I thought administration was addressing it.”
“Did they?”
“I don’t know.”
He looked toward the courtyard.

Then:
“After today, I’m not sure.”
