Chapter 26 - The bridge

The courtyard bridge remained.
For months Emma avoided it.
She used the west entrance.
No one forced exposure therapy on her.
Then one spring morning she told me:
COME EARLY
“Why?”
BRIDGE
We arrived before school.
Cold Boston air.
Fountain running again after winter shutdown.
Emma stood at the near end.
I stayed beside her.
She typed:
DON’T HOLD ME
“I won’t.”
She walked.
Slowly.
Halfway across she stopped.
Looked down at the fountain.
Then continued.
On the other side, she turned.
Pressed:
DONE
I smiled.
“Done.”
She typed:
NOT BRAVE
I laughed softly.
“Okay.”
JUST BRIDGE
Exactly.

The school had spent months turning the location into symbol.
Emma wanted it returned to architecture.
