Chapter 9 - Conduct Diversion

The school handbook had no section called Conduct Diversion.
The internal staff guide did.
It described a program created four years earlier.
Purpose:
Resolve lower-level student misconduct without formal disciplinary findings when behavior appeared:
First-time.
Nonviolent.
Responsive to intervention.
Appropriate for restorative resolution.
On paper:
Reasonable.
Students could:
Apologize.
Attend mediation.
Complete reflection exercises.
Avoid permanent disciplinary notation.
But internal emails revealed mission creep.
Administrators began routing serious incidents there because formal discipline affected:
College recommendations.
Leadership eligibility.
Athletic participation.
School discipline statistics.
Then parents began asking:
“Can this go through Diversion?”
Development office began asking:
“Is formal suspension really necessary?”
No written policy said:
Rich students get special treatment.
