Chapter 23 - Principal Whitmore writes Emma

Whitmore sent a letter after resigning.

Not to me.

To Emma.

She chose to read it.

He wrote:

I believed informal discipline protected students from being permanently defined by adolescent mistakes. I failed to recognize that repeated informal handling was allowing other students to define your school experience instead.

Good.

Then:

I am sorry.

Emma typed afterward:

HE KNEW SOME

“Yes.”

NOT ALL

“Probably.”

STILL HIS JOB

“Yes.”

She saved the letter.

Did not forgive him aloud.

Did not burn it.

Humans often want cleaner endings than the harmed person does.

Emma wanted information.

Then lunch.
