Chapter 5 - Madison’s phone

Madison had been recording.
Her phone became important because the fountain camera had no audio.
Could the school simply seize it forever?
No.
Could administrators temporarily secure it under school policy pending parent contact and investigation?
Their policies allowed limited action regarding devices used in disciplinary incidents.
Madison immediately deleted the video.
Or tried.
She told the dean:
“It was just a joke.”
Then:
“I deleted it.”
Her parents arrived with an attorney before dinner.
The attorney said:
“There will be no warrantless search of her private phone.”
Reasonable.
Nobody forced one.
But Madison had already posted a twelve-second clip to a private social account.
Students had screen-recorded it.
Copies spread.
By midnight, the school had several.
The video began before I arrived.
It showed Tyler holding Emma’s tablet above his head.
Emma reaching.
Madison laughing.
Then Madison saying:
“Say please.”
Emma gesturing desperately.
Tyler:
“She can’t.”
Then he threw the device.
Not an accident.
Not horseplay.
May you like
Not a disagreement over property.
Deliberate.
