Chapter 1 - The Empty Chair

The private dining hall of the Moretti estate was an opulent fortress of dark mahogany, gold leaf, and shimmering crystal chandeliers. Through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the brilliant nighttime skyline of the city glittered like scattered diamonds. At the head of the long formal dinner table sat Damien Moretti. At thirty-eight, he was one of the most powerful and feared men in the country—a mafia boss whose silent presence alone commanded absolute obedience. Tall, broad-shouldered, and sharply handsome, he possessed long dark wavy hair swept back from his face, a neatly trimmed full beard, and piercing dark eyes that rarely betrayed emotion. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a black dress shirt, a luxury timepiece on his wrist, and polished black leather shoes.
Beside him sat his fiancée, Selene Hart. At thirty-three, Selene was the picture of cold, aristocratic elegance. Dressed in a fitted black evening gown with dazzling diamond earrings and a glittering diamond bracelet, she rested her hand casually over a sleek black leather clutch. She was socially ruthless, poised, and accustomed to treating everyone around her as inferior.
Near the service entrance, twenty-nine-year-old Eva Bennett stood quietly in her classic black maid dress, white collar, and pale apron. Her hands were folded nervously in front of her. She was gentle, protective, and constantly anxious about maintaining a quiet life inside the mansion.
Suddenly, a tiny figure stepped out from behind the velvet drapes near the glass wall.
It was five-year-old Lily—Eva’s daughter. The little girl looked breathtakingly sweet in a pale pink party dress with delicate lace details and white shoes. Her long, dark curly hair fell over her shoulders, framing large, expressive eyes that took in the grand dining room with innocent wonder.
Lily walked hesitantly across the polished hardwood floor, her small shoes making almost no sound. She stopped right beside the formal dinner table, staring up at the grand, empty carved chair positioned directly to the right of Damien Moretti.
Eva’s heart dropped into her stomach. Her breath hitched in her throat as she realized her daughter had wandered into the middle of a high-society dinner. Eva stepped forward quietly, reaching out a trembling hand to guide Lily away before anyone noticed.
Selene turned her head first. Her sharp eyes locked onto the five-year-old child in the pink dress, her expression instantly hardening into cold disdain.
"You're staff, sweetheart," Selene said, her voice cutting through the soft dining music like a razor blade.
The entire room went dead still. Servants held their breath, and the wealthy guests at the table froze, their glasses suspended halfway to their lips.
Eva stepped forward protectively, placing her hands on Lily’s small shoulders, preparing to bow her head and pull her daughter back into the kitchen corridor.
Before Eva could move another inch, a heavy chair scraped against the hardwood.
Damien Moretti rose to his feet.
His commanding frame towered over the table. He reached out with a single tattooed hand, gently catching Eva’s arm to stop her from pulling the child away. Damien’s dark eyes shifted down to the quiet five-year-old girl looking up at him without a trace of fear.
With calm, controlled deliberation, Damien pulled back the heavy carved chair beside his own seat. He gestured softly down toward the leather cushion.
"That chair is hers tonight," Damien said, his voice a low, firm baritone that left no room for argument.

Lily looked at the big chair, then up into Damien’s rugged face. Slowly, carefully, she climbed up into the plush leather seat beside the most feared man in the city.
Across the table, Selene folded her arms tight against her chest, her jaw clenched in furious, humiliated silence.
