Chapter 22 - Shadows over the alpine ridge

The private medical suite inside Marcus’s fortified estate in Lugano smelled of antiseptic, burnt gunpowder, and damp wool. Damien sat on the edge of an examination table, refusing local anesthesia as a combat medic stitched a three-inch laceration along his collarbone. His eyes remained fixed on the tactical display glowing against the far wall, where the transponder logs of the gunship had vanished into thin air somewhere over the Engadin Valley.
"She knew the blind spots in the European radar grid," Marcus said quietly, stepping into the room and tossing a wet tablet onto the steel tray. "Only six people in the Sovereign Council had access to those flight corridors, Damien. And Clara was supposed to have been buried in a family crypt six years ago."
"It was her, Marcus," Damien said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that sent a chill through the room. "The voice, the eyes, the scar on her neck. It wasn't a double. It wasn't a ghost. It was my wife."
"Then she is a traitor," Marcus stated bluntly, crossing his massive arms. "The Black Sun isn't just a rogue faction anymore. They’re consolidating. They’ve systematically dismantled every Hart banking node from Frankfurt to Zurich over the last seventy-two hours. And now they have Lily. If they initiate the Sovereign Protocol using her genetic key, the entire global financial reserve under the Hart banner will transfer to their shadow ledger within twenty-four hours."
Damien stood up abruptly, brushing the medic aside before the last suture was tied. He pulled on a fresh tactical sweater, ignoring the sharp pull of stitches across his chest. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, circular metallic object he had managed to tear from Clara’s utility belt before she cut him loose.
It was a tracking transponder, but it wasn't military grade. It was an antique silver token, embossed with the crest of Saint Jude’s Sanatorium in the Bavarian Alps.
"Look at this," Damien commanded, sliding the token across the steel table.
Marcus picked it up with a gloved thumb, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the tarnished crest. "The old hospice near Berchtesgaden? The facility was decommissioned forty years ago after the Sovereign Council scrubbed its experiments on bloodline memory."
"Clara didn't join the Black Sun willingly at the start," Damien murmured, remembering the faint purple ring around her neck. "That mark beneath her jaw wasn't an ordinary scar. It was a neuro-chemical restraint collar. The kind they used on high-value captives who refused conditioning. She was sending me a message. She didn't drop this token by accident, Marcus. She let me rip it off."

"Or she's leading you straight into a kill zone," Marcus countered, his jaw tight. "If the Black Sun has an installation there, they will have an entire battalion of augmented security. You’ll be walking into an iron cage with zero air support."
"Lily is in that cage," Damien replied coldly, loading a heavy magazine into his sidearm and racking the slide with a clean, lethal click. "Prepare the stealth transport. We drop in twenty minutes."
