Chapter 11 - The Hollow Floorboards

Marco gave a sharp, disciplined nod. Within seconds, his earpiece was active, his voice low and clipped as he repositioned the outer perimeter guards and placed the inner sanctum on elevated alert.

Damien stepped back inside from the moonlit terrace. The opulent corridors of the Moretti estate were bathed in the soft glow of sconces, yet every shadow suddenly carried the weight of an unseen threat. He took the grand staircase two steps at a time, moving soundlessly toward the third floor.

Outside Lily’s nursery, two armed sentries stood motionless. They snapped to attention as Damien approached, but he raised a flat hand, signaling complete silence.

Quietly turning the ornate brass handle, Damien stepped inside.

The nursery was peaceful. A dim star-shaped nightlight cast constellations of warm amber across the vaulted ceiling. In the center of the room, nestled beneath a plush velvet duvet, five-year-old Lily slept soundly, her tiny hands clutching her mother’s restored locket. Eva sat in an armchair by the corner, reading a leather-bound book. She looked up, her maternal eyes widening slightly at the grim intensity in Damien’s gaze.

"Take her to the safe room beneath the library, Eva," Damien whispered, his voice steady but carrying absolute authority. "Wrap her warmly. Do not wake her unless necessary."

Eva asked no questions. She had served the Moretti family long enough to recognize the quiet before a tempest. With practiced, tender care, she scooped the sleeping girl into her arms, bundling the blankets around her, and slipped silently out of the room under the protection of Marco’s men.

Once the heavy oak door clicked shut, Damien was alone in the quiet nursery.

He knelt on the dark polished hardwood. The parchment had said: *Look beneath the floorboards.*

Damien pulled a slender stiletto blade from his inner pocket, using the flat tip to test the seams between the antique oak planks near the bay window. After three paces, one of the planks gave a hollow, metallic resonance.

Damien wedged the blade into the groove and pried gently. The tongue-and-groove joint yielded with a dry click, revealing a hidden compartment carved directly into the foundation subfloor.

Resting inside was a matte-black steel box bound with silver bands. On its lid was an engraved insignia: a twin-headed serpent entwined around a shattered crown—the mark of the Sovereign Council.

Damien lifted the heavy box out and placed it onto the low play table. It bore no physical keyhole, only a biometric thumb scanner coated in aged crystal glass.

Damien hesitated for only a fraction of a second before pressing his right thumb against the glass.

The mechanism whirred, clicking sharply as blue light flared across the sensor. With a hiss of broken pneumatic seals, the lid popped open.

Inside lay three items: a vial containing a residue of deep purple fluid, an encrypted digital drive of Swiss manufacture, and a handwritten letter penned on Clara’s own personalized stationary.

Damien’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized the delicate, flowing script instantly.

*My beloved Damien,* the letter began. *If you are reading this, Selene has already begun her betrayal, and I am already gone. But do not blame her alone. Selene is merely a pawn on an ancient chessboard...*
