Chapter 30 - The Sovereign override

Damien lifted his head. There was no fear in his eyes. There was no grief. There was only the cold, mathematical precision of an apex predator that had walked straight into a trap—because it was the only way to lure the hunter out of his fortress.
"You taught me that every operation requires a redundant failsafe," Damien said softly, raising his right wrist.
Concealed beneath the cuff of his tactical sweater was not a watch, but a matte-black subcutaneous transponder unit wired directly into his radial artery. A faint red LED pulsed in sync with his own heartbeat.
Alexander’s eyes narrowed, his arrogant composure cracking for the first time. "What is that?"
"When you founded the Black Sun forty years ago, you keyed the facility's fail-safe destruct sequence to the primary Sovereign heartbeat," Damien said, taking a slow, unhurried step forward despite the rifles tracking his skull. "You thought your heartbeat would be the only one that could ever authorize the thermal purge. But six years ago, when I thought Clara died, I spent three weeks in the Zurich vault rewriting the Council’s subterranean protocols. I didn't just inherit your bloodline, Father. I weaponized it."
The main console behind the bio-engineers suddenly blinked red. The vacuum-tube monitors flared to life, screeching with an agonizing, high-frequency alarm that rattled the teeth in Damien’s skull. A synthetic automated voice echoed through the facility’s intercoms:
*Sovereign Heartbeat Confirmed. Core Meltdown Initiated. Thermal Detonation in Sixty Seconds.*
Panic erupted instantly. The bio-engineers dropped their instruments, scrambling for the exits. The commandos hesitated, their discipline shattering as the red emergency strobes painted the walls in blood.
"You're bluffing!" Alexander snarled, his aristocratic facade vanishing into absolute fury. "You would incinerate yourself? You would incinerate your own daughter?!"
"I would burn down the entire world to keep her out of your hands," Damien replied, his voice chillingly calm.
Clara broke free from the distracted guards, kicking the feet out from under the nearest commando, snatching his sidearm in a fluid, lethal motion, and putting two rounds through the head of the drone operator. The drones went haywire, spinning in circles before crashing into the reinforced walls.
"Marcus, take Lily!" Damien roared.
Marcus moved like an avalanche, slamming his shoulder into two guards, scooping Lily from the titanium chair with one massive arm, and diving toward the reinforced service tunnel.
"Kill them!" Alexander screamed, raising his platinum cane, which clicked and extended into a lethal, pneumatic blade. "Kill them all!"
Damien lunged forward, closing the distance between himself and the father who had orchestrated his entire life’s agony. He slammed Alexander against the titanium operating table, his hands wrapping around the old man’s throat, feeling the artificial pulse vibrating beneath his skin.
"It’s over, old man," Damien snarled into his father’s face.
Alexander, despite choking for air, suddenly began to laugh. A wet, bloody, terrifying laugh that echoed through the blaring klaxons.
*Detonation in Thirty Seconds.*
"You fool..." Alexander choked out, his dying eyes gleaming with a monstrous triumph. "You think... you think Lily was the only child Clara bore in the dark?"
Damien’s grip froze on his father’s neck. A cold dread, a thousand times worse than the threat of thermal fire, paralyzed his heart. "What did you say?"
May you like
Alexander pointed a trembling, bloodstained finger toward Clara, who stood by the service tunnel door, holding a smoking rifle, her face pale as a ghost under the flashing red alarms.
"Ask her, Damien," Alexander whispered, blood bubbling over his lips as the timer on the wall hit fifteen seconds. "Ask her about Lily's twin brother."
