Chapter 27 - The return of the patriarch

The reinforced blast doors on the far side of the operating theater groaned as their hydraulic seals hissed open. The heavy steel slid back into the rock wall, revealing an observation platform overlooking the chamber.

Standing on the platform, leaning heavily on a cane topped with a solid platinum wolf’s head, was an elderly man dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. His silver hair was swept back from a face carved from granite, his icy blue eyes identical to Damien's. Despite the gaunt hollows in his cheeks and the faint, plastic sheen of medical tubing running beneath his collar, his presence dominated the entire room like a suffocating gravitational pull.

"Alexander," Marcus breathed, stepping back in genuine horror, his weapon shaking in his hands.

"Stand down, Marcus," Alexander Hart commanded, his voice as smooth and lethal as chilled bourbon. "You were always a loyal hound. Don't ruin thirty years of faithful service over a boy who was too sentimental to lead our empire."

Damien stared up at the man he had mourned for over a decade. The father whose portrait hung in the grand hall of their Massachusetts estate. The father who had taught him how to ride a horse, how to tie a Windsor knot, and how to bury his emotions.

"You're alive," Damien said, the words falling like lead weights onto the concrete floor.

"Alive, yes," Alexander replied, walking with a measured, deliberate gait toward the edge of the railing. "Though clinging to this frail, decaying vessel. Clara was right about one thing, Damien. You were an exquisite scalpel. You carved away the rot in the Sovereign Council. You eliminated the weak links who thought they could siphon our wealth. You unified the Black Sun under my singular command, believing all the while that you were avenging your fallen wife."

Alexander chuckled, a dry, rattling sound from the depths of his failing lungs. "And Clara played her part to perfection. She gave you a daughter. The ultimate collateral."

Damien snapped his gaze toward Clara, his eyes wide with a fresh, sickening horror. "What did he just say?"

Clara looked away, unable to meet Damien’s eyes. Tears finally broke free, tracing down her pale cheeks. "Damien... please..."

"She was never a victim, my boy," Alexander smiled, his teeth gleaming in the harsh fluorescent light. "Clara was recruited from the French Foreign Legion's black ops division twelve years ago. Her assignment was simple: infiltrate your circle, become indispensable, marry you, and produce a third-generation heir with the recessive Sovereign allele. Her 'death' six years ago was merely an extraction when the Council grew suspicious of our timeline."
