Chapter 28 - The poison in the promise

The air inside the chamber felt thick, suffocating, like breathing wet cement. Damien stared at Clara, the woman he had loved with every fiber of his soul, the woman whose phantom had haunted his nights and driven him through a decade of war and bloodshed.
Every kiss. Every whispered promise in the dark. Every tender touch while Lily slept in her crib.
It was all an operation. A multi-year military extraction project designed to harvest a child for an old man’s immortality.
"Is it true?" Damien asked, his voice dead, flat, hollowed out of every human emotion.
Clara’s shoulders shook with a silent sob, but she did not deny it. "At first, yes. It was an assignment. I was a soldier, Damien. I didn't care about you, I didn't care about the Hart empire. It was just a contract."
She looked up at him, her hazel eyes red and desperate. "But then Lily was born! I held her in my arms, and everything I had ever been trained to do vanished. I couldn't do it! That's why I staged the explosion six years ago! I tried to run with her! But Alexander found us before we could leave Europe. He locked me in the sanatorium. He put the collar on my neck. He told me that if I didn't play my part, he would execute Lily and harvest her corpse!"
"An unfortunate, but necessary leverage," Alexander noted casually from the balcony, adjusting his diamond cufflinks. "A mother's instinct is a powerful chemical, but entirely predictable when properly stimulated. And now, the circle is complete."
Alexander tapped his platinum cane twice against the metal grating of the platform.

Instantly, the ceiling grates blew open. Four heavy combat drones dropped down into the theater on pneumatic cables, their twin rotary barrels spinning up with a high-pitched whine that shook the room. From the side corridors, a dozen Black Sun commandos poured into the chamber, their heavy assault rifles locked onto Damien and Marcus's team.
"Drop your weapons, Damien," Alexander ordered, his voice losing its aristocratic warmth, replaced by the cold, merciless authority of an absolute monarch. "I gave you life. I gave you purpose. Do not make me waste the resources I spent molding you into a weapon."
