Chapter 6 - Clara's Silent Message

The quiet inside the private study was shattered by a sudden, deafening crash from the mansion’s lower courtyard.
The emergency red lights throughout the corridors flickered wildly before dying completely, plunging the mansion into total darkness. High-powered tactical flashlight beams cut through the glass windows as heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the front gates.
Marco burst through the study door, his sidearm drawn. "Boss! The west wing security perimeter has been breached! Selene’s family syndicate—the Hart Group—just hit the front gates with three tactical vans!"
Damien stood up, his dark eyes burning with an unholy, lethal rage. The grief that had weighed down his heart for six years vanished, replaced by the terrifying fury of a father whose family had been threatened.
"Where is Lily?" Damien thundered over the noise of gunfire.
"She’s in the staff quarters with two guards!" Marco shouted back.
"Move her to the master panic vault!" Damien ordered, pulling a heavy tactical weapon from the hidden compartment behind his desk. "Eva, stay close to Marco! Nobody touches my daughter!"
They sprinted down the dark hallway as glass shattered on the ground floor. Selene’s family had sent a mercenary strike force to erase every trace of the medical records, the housemaid, and the five-year-old child who held the bloodline secret.
Down in the west corridor, two mercenaries in dark tactical gear kicked open the staff doors.
Standing in the middle of the dark hallway was five-year-old Lily, holding her pale pink dress skirt, her dark curls bouncing as she looked at the armed men in terror.
Before the lead mercenary could reach for the child, a shadow moved with blinding speed.
Damien stepped out from the adjacent hallway. With lethal efficiency, he disarmed the lead attacker, dropping him to the floor, while Marco took out the second gunman with two precise shots.
Damien dropped his weapon, dropped to his knees, and scooped Lily up into his massive, muscular arms, pulling her tightly against his chest.
"Daddy's here," Damien whispered into her dark curls, his voice thick with tears as he used the word Daddy for the very first time. "I've got you, baby. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
Lily wrapped her small arms around Damien’s neck, burying her face into his shoulder. "I knew you were my daddy," she whispered softly into his ear. "Mommy showed me your picture every night."
Damien held his daughter tight, looking up at Eva with a profound, unspoken debt of gratitude in his eyes.

Suddenly, a cold, familiar voice echoed from the top of the grand balcony.
"How touching," Selene sneered, stepping into the red emergency light, holding a sleek silver firearm aimed directly at Damien’s chest. "The happy little family reunited at last."
