Chapter 5 - The Locket under the Pillow

Five minutes later, Eva Bennett stepped nervously into the private study. She was pale, her hands gripping the fabric of her black maid apron as she looked at the feared mafia boss standing by the window.
Damien turned around slowly. He didn't look at her with the cold authority of a crime lord; he looked at her with the raw desperation of a father searching for a miracle.
"Eva," Damien said softly, walking over to stand in front of her. "Six years ago, you worked at St. Jude's Hospital."
Eva’s breath hitched. She took a half-step back, her eyes wide with terror. "Mr. Moretti... please. I didn't break any rules—"
"I don't care about the rules, Eva," Damien interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. "I care about my wife, Clara. And I care about the baby girl who was born on October 14 six years ago."
Eva dropped to her knees right there on the Persian rug, tears spilling over her lashes as she buried her face in her hands. "I knew this day would come... I knew I couldn't hide her forever."
Damien dropped to one knee beside her, his large hands gently lifting her arms. "Tell me the truth, Eva. Who is Lily?"
"She is your daughter, Mr. Moretti," Eva sobbed softly. "She is Clara's baby."
Damien felt as if the air had been kicked from his lungs. Tears welled up in his own dark eyes as he absorbed the truth he had prayed for across six agonizing years.
"Why did you take her?" Damien asked, his voice trembling. "Why did you let me believe she was dead?"
"I didn't steal her!" Eva cried out, looking up into his eyes. "Your wife gave her to me, Damien! On the night Clara died, she knew she was being poisoned by someone in the hospital. She paid me to fake the stillbirth records, slip the baby out through the service exit, and raise her under a false name until it was safe!"
Eva reached into her collar, pulling out a small silver chain from around her neck. Hanging from the chain was a tiny, worn silver capsule.
"Clara gave me this before she took her last breath," Eva whispered. "She said inside this capsule was the proof of who tried to kill her."
Damien took the silver capsule into his trembling palm. He pressed the hidden latch on the side, and the small metal container popped open.
Inside rested a microscopic key and a tiny piece of folded parchment paper.

Damien unfolded the parchment with utmost care. Written in Clara's distinct, beautiful handwriting was a single sentence:
Damien, my love—Selene Hart poisoned my IV fluid. Save our daughter.
