Chapter 11 - My Slap

I wanted to erase this chapter.
Couldn’t.
I hit Celina.
She had just assaulted my child.
I was furious.
But when I reached her, Ellie was already behind a bodyguard.
Celina was not attacking her anymore.
My slap was retaliation.
Not rescue.
Police took statements.
Witnesses confirmed the sequence.
Celina’s lawyer pressed charges.
Fair.
I did not claim self-defense.
My attorney nearly exploded.
“Victor, stop volunteering legal conclusions.”
I answered:
“I hit her because I was angry.”
That was the truth.
The matter was ultimately resolved as a misdemeanor offense with penalties appropriate to the conduct and my lack of prior similar record.
I paid.
Completed required counseling.
Did not enjoy it.
That did not make it unnecessary.
Ellie later asked:
“Was it bad you hit her?”
I said:
“Yes.”
“But she hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“So?”
I sat beside her.
“Protecting you is my job. Punishing people is not.”

Hard sentence.
Necessary one.
