Chapter 15 - The Better Daughter

Why tell Ellie:
Daddy needs a better daughter?
Celina explained through her lawyer that she meant:
“better-behaved daughter.”
Nonsense.
Witnesses remembered other comments.
At a luncheon:
“Ellie has Victor wrapped around her finger.”
At a fundraiser:
“He’ll never make hard decisions about her.”
At my house:
“A child should understand she represents a family, not herself.”
That ideology explained the swing.
Ellie resisted.
Celina viewed resistance as evidence of spoiled behavior.
Once Celina convinced herself Sofia had selected her as a stabilizing influence, ordinary cruelty became correction.
That is how false authority becomes dangerous.
