Chapter 3 - A Number

The paper contained only six digits and one letter.
Nothing else.
No message.
No name.
I called Margaret.
She was already on her way back after hearing what happened.
Twenty minutes later, she entered the library.
Saw Ellie.
Then saw my face.
“Victor.”
“What is this?”
I held up the strip.
Margaret sat.
She looked genuinely afraid.
“Sofia told me if anything ever happened around Ellie involving someone claiming Sofia had chosen them, I was supposed to give you that.”
That sentence made no sense.
“When?”
“A month before she died.”
“Why didn't you give it to me then?”
“She told me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because she said if nobody ever used her name, then you never needed it.”
I sat opposite her.
“What does the number open?”
“Not money.”
She knew me well enough to anticipate the first suspicion.
“Not a trust. Not a bank account. Nothing like that.”
May you like
“What then?”
“A case file.”
